VISUAL ARTS
HISTORY
Although AJW completed his art studies behind the iron curtain, thanks to the success of his finalist submission in the international Auschwitz Memorial design competition, AJW was granted the 1962 Ford Foundation scholarship. This accomplishment allowed him the unique opportunity to immerse himself in the avant garde art world of the 20th century. Taking full advantage of the studio visits and the opportunity to learn from some of the most prominent artists of the era, including Alexander Calder, Alexander Archipenko and Isamu Noguchi, AJW engaged in artistic explorations that caught the eye of internationally renowned art critics and collectors including the curators at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA), who acquired his work for the MOMA collection. One of AJW’s renowned photographs, “The Mask”, was published in the Life magazine and subsequently reprinted in the French magazine Science et Vie, as well as the Polish periodical Wiedza i Zycie (Knowledge and Life).
CONCEPT
AJW has also published extensively on art and semantics of the form, particularly in relation to design. Much of his theoretical work has focused on the visual associations and ways in which the world of nature can be framed within the ethos of art beyond just serving as a source of inspiration. For AJW, the sensibility that underscores our capacity to attend to the intricacies of the visual world and which is at the foundation of artistic discernment needs to be carefully nurtured throughout life to expand human experience through aesthetic fulfilment. His book Sztuka Widzenia (The Art of Seeing, 2012) brings together AJW’s reflections on art, life and creativity.
COLLECTIONS
In addition to the MOMA, AJW’s works can be found in other acclaimed museums and institutions worldwide, including the National Museum in Warsaw, the Museum of Art in Lodz, Museum of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, The NTNU Art Museum in Taipei, the Beckman Institute at the University of Illinois, the Museum of Technology in Warsaw, and numerous private collections across Europe, North America, and Asia.
